Kearny High School Kearny, New Jersey

Midland Avenue photos
|
Few of us are old enough to remember, but there was a time not that long ago, when there was a lot of vacant space in Kearny. Harrison was there much earlier; North Arlington came along much later; but there was a time when there wasn't much Kearny between the two. The heart of the original Kearny was not Kearny Avenue, but instead was the area near Midland Avenue & Elm Street the area near the Arlington Depot. The trains that brought New Yorkers to Kearny brought them to that part of town. In fact, there was even a hotel "out in the country" on Forest Street near the depot. As Kearny grew, it was Midland Avenue that was the principal business district. It was still thriving as a business district in my boyhood in the 1950's. I remember candy stores at Elm and at Beech; a hardware store at Devon; a fish market near Devon; an A&P grocery between Beech & Chestnut. Early in the 1900's an electric railroad (i.e., a trolley line) connected this part of Kearny with downtown Newark and did run down Kearny Avenue, but it was Midland Avenue that was Kearny's main street in its early days.
